The Long Beach Dub All-Stars was the first group started by the two surviving members of Sublime after the passing of original lead singer Bradley Nowell. This photo comes from 1998’s “Big Mele” concert — about a year after the group was formed.

Eric Wilson and Bud Gaugh are now touring with singer/guitarist Rome Ramirez under the band name Sublime with Rome. The band will stop in Hawaii this November; tickets are available now for a Nov. 19 show on Oahu and a Nov. 21 date on Maui.

Fourteen years ago this week, No Doubt was back in Hawaii and the bands meteoric rise to international superstardom was still in it’s early stages.

The band had been around for nearly a decade when their album, “Tragic Kingdom,” and the first single, “Just a Girl,” were released in October 1995, but things didn’t really take off until the end of 1996 — shortly after this performance on Oahu.

This week’s photo was captured just sixteen days prior to the 20th Anniversary of their very first show.

Over the course of their 22-year career from 1974 to 1996, The Ramones made 2,263 concert appearances and continue to influence bands around the world.

Blink-182 hoped over to Hawaii for the then annual ‘Big Mele’ festival in the midst of recording their
breakthrough album, Enema of the State. It was band’s third full-length, but their first to feature Travis Barker on drums.

While it wasn’t their first time performing in the islands, perhaps the visit helped inspire a few of the hits off the album.

This was captured at the Hawaii version of the traveling Smokeout Festival, organized by Cypress Hill, and shows an injured Eric Melvin doing his best not to disapoint the crowd despite his obvious limitations. The always animated guitar player had gotten hurt on stage just days earlier, but vowed not to miss the Hawaii date.

From what I recall, both Suicidal Tendencies and the Kottonmouth Kings were supposed to play this show as well, but neither actually did because the show was moved back by a week or so.

The three-piece powerhouse from Long Beach, Calif. performed in Hawaii just two and half months before setting out on the road as co-headliners of the first ever Warped Tour.

Almost exactly one year after their Hawaii concert, Bradley Nowell, pictured, would die of a drug overdose in San Francisco.

Sixteen years ago this week, Mike Ness and the boys made a rare appearance in Hawaii when they took the stage at the second annual “Big Mele” festival.

This band is still active — they are currently in the studio preparing a new album, “Hard Times and Nursery Rhymes,” set for a November release on Epitaph Records.

Here’s a cool shot of an excited Sammy Hagar taken during the second of two nights at Blaisdell Arena.

This concert was also the last date of the “Balance World Tour” in support of Van Halen’s 10th studio album, and was nicknamed “The Ambulance Tour” due to the fact that both Van Halen brothers wound up dealing with injuries.

It also marked the last time with Hagar on vocals before a nine-year past and a brief reunion.

From ‘Vixen’ to ‘Aloha’ to ‘Hawaii’, this band changed names (and band members) quite a bit during its five-year run, but through it all was guitarist Marty Friedman, who would later go on to spend a decade making some classic albums as a member of Megadeth.

Not much is known about this shot, other than it was taken at McKinley High in the early 1980’s.
