Fiesta will celebrate Filipino culture

Oahu’s Filipino community will celebrate as one tomorrow when the 18th annual Filipino Fiesta takes place in Waikiki.

The day starts at 9 a.m. with a parade along Kalakaua Avenue (starting at Fort DeRussy) that will showcase various aspects of Filipino history and culture. From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Kapiolani Park, the fiesta itself will include a variety of live entertainment and vendor booths, along with food booths serving up authentic Filipino fare.

Pet Expo opens this weekend at Blaisdell

The Hawaii Veterinary Medical Association presents the “biggest local pet event of the year” this weekend as the 2010 Hawaii Pet Expo arrives at the Blaisdell Exhibition Hall.

All socialized pets and their owners are welcome, with a variety of vendor booths and informational displays available. In addition, live animal demonstrations are planned, and a variety of animal clubs from around the state will be on hand.

While admission is free, canned goods will be collected for the Hawaii Food Bank.

Hawaiian music jam returns for May Day

Mass Appeal Productions, United DJs and Island 98.5 celebrate May Day with the 2010 edition of “Jammin Hawaiians” at the Waikiki Shell.

Once again, the annual concert promises the best and the brightest from Hawaii’s island contemporary music scene, with scheduled performances by Nesian N.I.N.E., Maoli, Kawao, Cease Fiya, Hookoa, Big Every Time, City Side, Sheriff Brown and the Green.

Maui’s Hawaiian Home Boy also will make the trip to Oahu for the show; additionally, the concert will feature a performance by Jamaican reggae artist Lukie D.

After two years away from the local punk scene, veteran rockers Extra Stout return to the stage tonight as the headlining band at their own reunion show.

From 1999 to 2008, Extra Stout toured the mainland twice and opened for the likes of Flogging Molly, Dropkick Murphys and Rat City Riot in Honolulu. They compare their sound to bands like the Clash, C — Sparrer and the Business.

Nearly 600 student-produced videos are scheduled to be screened tomorrow at the second annual “‘Olelo Youth Xchange Video Marathon” at Pearlridge.

With assistance from Sony Hawaii, multiple large-screen monitors will be set up at both the Uptown and Downtown center courts; mall customers also will be able to enter to win a Sony HDvideo camera.

Along with the screenings, a brief ceremony will be held at 12:30 p.m. tomorrow with remarks by representatives from ‘Olelo Community Media, Sony Hawaii and Pearlridge.

After seeing the documentary “Blood Into Wine” at the Regal Dole Cannery Stadium 18, viewers can remain in the mood for vino by heading down to Fujioka’s for “Sip With HIFF,” a wine tasting and fundraiser to benefit the Hawaii International Film Festival.

Besides an assortment of wine and pupu, patrons also will get a custom wine glass as a gift.

New Zealand-based Katchafire arrives in Honolulu this weekend for its only Hawaii performance of 2010 as the headliners at “The Mayjah Rayjah” at the Waikiki Shell.

Doors open at 4:30 p.m. tomorrow with all ages welcome, although promoters have stressed there will be no “beer garden” at the venue to keep those over the age of 21 from drinking on the grass. Local openers for the show include All Natro, Kolohe Kai, Nesian N.I.N.E., Cease Fiyah, the Green and Straight Up.

The concert also will double as a CD release party for Rebel Souljahz’s latest album, “Bring Back the Days.”

Bands face off for shot at festival gig

It’s a battle for Honolulu rock supremacy tonight at the Hard Rock Cafe when Friends of Adam and Phoenix Rose face off for an opportunity to play at the British music festival Hard Rock Calling.

The two bands each beat out three others last week to secure a spot in the Hawaii finals; the winner’s performance will be filmed and submitted to Hard Rock corporate to determine if the band will advance to the national finals.

While preliminary rounds were judged by a panel of contest sponsors, the finals will be a little more legit, thanks to input from Easy Music Center’s Peter Dods, Pimpbot’s Eric Lagrimas and Quadraphonix’s Shree Sadagopan.

Vinyl fanatics can gather in Kakaako

Got vinyl? The Lightsleepers Hawaii crew wants to see you at “Beatroot Bodega” tomorrow at Fresh Cafe.

Billed as “Hawaii’s first record swap” all-ages event, the hope is to bring together Honolulu’s vinyl purists, DJs, collectors and anyone else interested in digging through crates for musical gems. Hawaii-based clothing companies and other retailers also have been invited to set up shop at the Kakaako coffee shop’s warehouse space.

In addition to the wheeling and dealing, local DJs Observ, Oliver Twist, Jahson the 45 Revolver and special guests will spin vinyl-only sets on the turntables at Fresh Cafe.
