Imagine a Juilliard Institute, a “Fame” school and perhaps a Bela Karolyi Gymnastics Institute rolled into one, and you might have the equivalent of the Shanghai Children’s Palace.

The Children’s Palace, founded by Soong Ching Ling, wife of Sun Yat-Sen, the founder of modern China and an ‘Iolani grad, was the first arts and academic institution for children to be established in the Peoples Republic of China, and remains one of its most prestigious. A group of 45 children from the institution will be giving a performance tonight showcasing the many young artists who study at the school.

This is the fourth time that the Shanghai Children’s Palace has sent a group to Hawaii, but the first in nearly 10 years. The government-backed organization has also sent group to perform at the White House and throughout Europe and Asia.

The Olana Ai Hula Halau will be joining the visitors to make it a multicultural affair.

By Mike Gordon

“Hawaii Five-0” will hold an open casting call Aug. 28 for adults of all ages and ethnicities to be considered for speaking roles and as background extras.

The “Five-0” producers are aiming for authenticity when it comes to portraying Hawaii, said Rachel Sutton, the casting agent for the show. From hot surfers to aunties in oversized muumuu to sunburned tourists — everyone is welcome, she said.

“We definitely want to present Hawaii in the most realistic way and the reality of Hawaii is all of these different looks of people,” she said. “We need to fill the whole palette.”

No experience is necessary. The casting call will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 28 at Aloha Tower Marketplace. If possible, bring a “headshot” photograph and a resume but plan to be photographed.

“Hawaii Five-0” premieres with a sneak preview Sept. 13 at Sunset on the Beach at Waikiki. The network premiere will be Sept. 20.

Five Minutes With… WWE Champ Sheamus

The last year and a half has been quite a ride for Stephen Farrelly, the Irish professional wrestler known to World Wrestling Entertainment fans as two-time WWE Champion Sheamus.

Sheamus made his WWE debut in 2009 after stints in Florida and across the Atlantic Ocean in England; since then, he’s feuded with some of the business’ biggest stars and, most recently, retained his WWE title after being disqualified in a match against Randy Orton last weekend at the company’s “SummerSlam” live event.

The champ, along with some of his co-workers from WWE’s RAW brand, will be in town tonight before heading on to shows in Asia. The Honolulu Star-Advertiser caught up with him last week by telephone.

KAILUA-KONA » Before more than 20 bartenders lined up at the Royal Kona Resort to determine the “World’s Best Mai Tai” last weekend, a handful of Big Island restaurants squared off in a “Battle of the BBQ” competition during the Second Annual Don the Beachcomber Mai Tai Festival.

Just steps from the Pacific Ocean on the Kona coast, hotel guests and local residents mingled on a well-manicured lawn and sampled contest entries while also perusing a Mai Tai Marketplace set up in the same area. Maui’s Eric Gilliom was on hand to provide musical entertainment during the afternoon.

Honolulu residents should consider themselves pretty lucky to have a number of new options for hamburgers made with quality ingredients in recent years.

Gourmet burger shops like Burgers on the Edge and The Counter have joined longtime favorites like Kua Aina, W&M Burger and even The Pineapple Room (Alan Wong makes a pretty mean burger, you know). If you’re true carnivores like us, then you’ve probably tasted the offerings at Kailua Town Pub, The Shack, Gordon Biersch and 12th Avenue Grill, too.

The Moana Surfrider was bustling last Saturday as the resort kicked off a monthlong festival celebrating the epitome of summer isle fruits — the mango.

It took a worldwide event to get a longtime record store on the Windward side some due credit.

For the third year in a row, Record Store Day back in April celebrated the culture that is part of the neighborhood, independent businesses around the world, which included in its campaign Hungry Ear Records in Kailua.

Store owners Dennie Chong and Ward Yamashita hope to keep that upbeat spirit going by celebrating 30 years in the retail music biz. Today through Saturday, they’ll be reducing prices on all of their inventory, which include new and used CDs, DVDs, Blu-Rays and vinyl records.

Sunday afternoons in Mokuleia mean polo matches during the summer months, thanks to the efforts of the Hawaii Polo Club. Last weekend, they got help from Glenn Mercante and Gerardo Belez, who brought their “LEOFEST” party (which originated in New York City in 1990) to Oahu.

Along with a match between a polo team from India against a team of Americans, the afternoon also featured a skydiving competition and live music by Green Eggs & Sam.
