Honolulu hip-hop heads came together last Thursday at Aloha Tower Marketplace to celebrate the life of one of their own along with the release of a new album by an artist with Hawaii ties.

The Dilated Peoples’ Rakaa Iriscience, who spent part of his childhood on the windward side of Oahu, was in town to promote the release of his latest solo project, “Crown of Thorns,” at Don Ho’s Island Grill. The party doubled as a fundraiser for the family of Walter “High Chief XL” Saole, a local club bouncer and freestyle MC who died recently. Opening acts included local artists Tassho Pearce, Creed Chameleon, CJ Fresh, DJ Jimmy Taco and DJ Packo. Read more

Honolulu hip-hop heads came together at Tropics Cafe last Saturday to celebrate the homecoming of one of their own, MC Meiso, who is back in town after touring in Asia.

Hosted by KTUH’s DJ Bone, “Hip-Hop at the Trops” is a regular showcase of local rap acts and home to some of the fiercest freestyle battles in town. His “Got Rice? Show” on the University of Hawaii student-run radio station is another bastion for Hawaii hip-hop in a sea of mainland sameness heard on the majority of mainstream commercial radio. Read more

Do It: Das Racist hilarity hauls in hip-hop sounds

Das Racist is a joke.

The irreverent duo from Brooklyn has been followed closely along the festival and concert trails in recent months, creating buzz at the South by Southwest Music Festival. They made a name for themselves with stupid-smart raps that kicked off with last summer’s inane but hilarious “Combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell.” Other fresh bits followed — “Chicken and Meat,” “Who’s That? Brooown!” and “Rainbow in the Dark,” mixing goofs with a smart, punkish edge and killer, hip hop-inflected sounds.

Himanshu Suri and Victor Vazquez (reportedly classmates of MGMT at Wesleyan University in Connecticut), already notorious and entertaining cut-ups on stage, get hypeman Ashok “Dap” Kondabolu to work up the crowd even more.

The guys’ latest project is the mixtape “Shut Up, Dude,” combining all of the aforementioned tunes.

We expect hilarity will ensue.

Opening for the reunited Black Star will be local artists Tassho Pearce, Creed Chameleon and San Francisco-based female vocalist Goapele.

Doors will open at 7 p.m., with the show starting at 9. Tickets are priced at $45 general admission and $85 VIP, and will be available at all Local Motion stores, Navy ITT offices, the University of Hawaii-Manoa Campus Center and online at www.groovetickets.com.
