Owl City’s breakout single, “Fireflies,” almost made Adam Young a star — almost because his quiet demeanor keeps him a relatively anonymous personality despite his success. Young returned to Hawaii last weekend to play his second concert in as many years at Pipeline Cafe. Owl City’s sophomore album, the platinum-selling “Ocean Eyes,” was re-released earlier this year with additional material included that was left over from the album’s recording sessions.

The ladies of Cherry Blossom Cabaret launched their new monthly party, “MenageA3,” at Apartment3 last weekend. Every third Saturday will feature a different theme, starting with August’s “Glitz & Glamour” theme that called for an “old Hollywood feel.” The ladies were joined by DJ Kitty Lee and a “vintage photo booth” provided by Firebird Photography.

Christian reggae band Christafari arrived in Honolulu last weekend to headline a fundraiser for Help the Hawaii Homeless as part of the band’s “Try Jah Love” tour at Pipeline Cafe.

The band was joined by local openers Isouljahs, SoulVibe and White Lines; Eden Entertainment promoted the 18-and-over concert.

As summer rolls around, so does the traveling dance machine known as the Love Festival.

Honolulu hip-hop heads came together at Tropics Cafe last Saturday to celebrate the homecoming of one of their own, MC Meiso, who is back in town after touring in Asia.

Hosted by KTUH’s DJ Bone, “Hip-Hop at the Trops” is a regular showcase of local rap acts and home to some of the fiercest freestyle battles in town. His “Got Rice? Show” on the University of Hawaii student-run radio station is another bastion for Hawaii hip-hop in a sea of mainland sameness heard on the majority of mainstream commercial radio. Read more

Southern rap group GS Boyz brought their hit single, “Stanky Legg,” to Aloha Tower Marketplace last Friday when they performed with co-headliners Party Boyz and opening acts B-Hamp, Lil’ Will “My Dougie and DJ G-Flava. The concert was produced by All-Star Swag Entertainment and Samoan Dynasty.

Following the show at Aloha Tower, the party moved to Oceans808 where the GS Boyz held a meet-and-greet with the club’s late night crowd. Read more
