Fiesta will celebrate Filipino culture

Oahu’s Filipino community will celebrate as one tomorrow when the 18th annual Filipino Fiesta takes place in Waikiki.

The day starts at 9 a.m. with a parade along Kalakaua Avenue (starting at Fort DeRussy) that will showcase various aspects of Filipino history and culture. From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Kapiolani Park, the fiesta itself will include a variety of live entertainment and vendor booths, along with food booths serving up authentic Filipino fare.

Find crafts and music at Lei Day celebration

Lei Day falls on a Saturday this year, and the 83rd annual celebration will be showcasing a hoolaulea of Hawaiian arts and crafts, a steel guitar contest, the lei contest exhibit, and mainstage hula and music all day.

Highlights include performances by the Royal Hawaiian Band, Kapena and Maunaloa, and hula by Na Wahine O Ka Hula Mai Ka Pu‘uwai and Halau Hula ‘O Hokulani.

Ceremonies honor Prince Kuhio

Celebrate the life and legacy of Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole with a variety of events this weekend, thanks to the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs.

Kalanianaole will be remembered during a lei-draping ceremony today at Kuhio Beach and a later celebration of life at the Royal Mausoleum at Maunaala. The festivities will continue at Kapiolani Park tomorrow, with a hoolaulea from 1 to 4 p.m. followed by a commemorative parade at 4 p.m. and a moonlight concert with Ku‘uipo Kumukahi and other musical acts and hula halau from 6 to 9 p.m.

“This year’s events are not only a celebration of the life of Prince Kuhio, but also a way for us to remember the life of (Wayne) Kahoonei Panoke, who was the heart and soul of these events for the last three years,” said AHCC president Leimomi Khan. Panoke died Nov. 13 after a brief illness.

Drug-Free Hawaii Awareness Month comes to a close with the 10th Annual Heritage Backyard Jam.

Entertainment will be provided by Vaihi, Kawao, the De Lima Ohana, Jahmaka and the Ewalani Hula Maids & Na Kane Hula. There also will be food and educational resource booths, jumpers and children’s activities.

All of this is presented by the Coalition for a Drug-Free Hawaii and co-sponsored by the Star-Bulletin.

Celebrate Lei Day at Kapiolani Park

Now in its 82nd year, the City and County of Honolulu hosts a Lei Day celebration at Kapiolani Park from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Friday.

Starting with a 9 a.m. performance by the Royal Hawaiian Band, the all-day event will feature a variety of live entertainment, lei-making demonstrations, a lei contest and more. Admission is free, thanks to the support of Hawaiian Electric Company, Times Supermarket, Oceanic Time Warner Cable, Cox Radio Hawaii and the Hawaii Tourism Authority.

Here’s a complete listing of Friday’s events:

  • 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Royal Hawaiian Band
  • 10:15 a.m. to noon Investiture ceremony for 2009 Lei Queen and Royal Court; official opening of lei contest exhibit
