[PICS] On the Scene: Tommy Tutone

Tutone turns in two sets at Pipeline

Tommy Tutone lived up to expectations and kept his promise to “play as long as possible” as he and his band played for two full sets May 7 at Pipeline Cafe.

“867-5309/Jenny,” his signature hit from 1982, was the song most of the crowd was there to hear but he also had them dancing and rocking out when he put his stamp on hits by other artists and introduced originals from his later albumsl. Most of the selections in both sets were unfamiliar, but where many “oldies artists” lose the audience when they do their newer music Tutone held their interest and made each song worth hearing.

No question about it, the depth and breadth of his repertoire extends far beyond the classic ‘80s rock sound of “867-5309/Jenny” — and a lot of the people who didn’t go to the concert would have considered it a night well spent if they had.

I’m glad I did.

Veteran event promoter and club DJ G-Spot (aka Double-0 Spot) partied before the concert with Jeannette Rhodes.

The inimitable Slick Vic, left, a welcome guest co-hosting the “Oldies 107.9” morning show with veteran radio personality Ed Kanoi earlier last week, emceed the concert. Vic talked with Tim Cupschalk, Laurie Savo and Connie Fukuda before show time.

Paul “Colonel” Klink, left, enjoyed an early game of pool with Echo Gu and Chris Anagnostakos.

Event promoter Daryl Oyadomari, left, and his girl friend, Kacie Unten, stopped by to check out the concert and met Jed Roa, one of the guys who originally opened Pipeline in 1999 and has been managing it ever since.

Oyadomari, best known for his “Chic Soirée” parties and membership in the Slopes of Diamond Head Hui, says his next big project is a two-club event May 21 at Ward Center.

Two prominent Honolulu residents were honored, for their contributions to international diplomacy and to international relations respectively, as the Consular Corps Hawaii presented Niklaus Schweizer, honorary consul of Switzerland, the Distinguished Service Medal, and Hank Stackpole, LTGEN, USMC (Ret.), the Distinguished Service Medal, at the Corps’ 2010 Inaugural Ball last Saturday at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel.

In accepting the honor, Stackpole said he was “thankful for my (wife) Vivian” and recalled a time early in their marriage when he came home from field exercises in a “grungey” uniform — she told him to step outside and “burn it.” He also got an appreciative laugh when he quoted her as saying that being married to a Marine is “a lifetime reclamation project.”

Schweizer, the Corps’ historian for several decades, will celebrate his 70th birthday this year, and was informed by the emcee, William Paupe, honorary consul of Kiribati, that although he must retire as honorary Swiss consul at 70, he will have honorary membership in the organization for life. HAWAII THEATRE HONORS DR. TSEU

Burton White, left, Artistic Director and General Manager of the Hawaii Theatre, welcomed Dr. Tseu and John Henry Felix before the doors opened and the formal program began. Tseu and Felix pointed out the place across the street where they’d worked as shoe shine boys.

Honolulu philanthropist Dr. Lawrence K.W. Tseu was the guest of honor Thursday when the Hawaii Theatre Center formally named the theater’s inner lobby the Dr. Lawrence & Mrs. BoHing Chan Tseu Lobby in recognition of his “enduring and significant support of the organization.”

Dr. Tseu has served on the theater’s board of directors since 2003 and has donated more than $250,000 to the theater.

Friends, civic leaders and other beneficiaries of Dr. Tseu’s philanthropic activities looked on as a pair of Chinese lion dancers unveiled the plaque in the newly renamed inner lobby. Next came a short program in the theater that included a retrospective of Dr. Tseu’s career accomplishments as a poor boy who worked hard and made good.

Dr. Tseu recalled earning his first dollar as a shoe shine boy working Bethel Street with John Henry Felix, “my buddy for more than 70 years,” and also they also earned money delivering newspapers and diving for coins in Honolulu Harbor.

Felix described them both as “products of the Depression” who worked full-time while still in elementary school to help support their families and put themselves through school.

Speaking of Dr. Tseu’s life-long commitment to hard work, education and philanthropy Felix said, “He excelled…BoHing would be exceedingly proud.”

Kumu hula Michael Pili Pang, attending as the representative of Mayor Hannemann, read excerpts of a proclamation designating February 4, 2010 “Dr. Lawrence Tseu Day.”

The celebration continued with a Chinese buffet reception upstairs where so many people wanted at least one photograph with Dr. Tseu that he didn’t have time to eat. Among those on hand to share the moment were Al and Charlyn Masini, Nohelani Cypriano, Jackie Young, Guy Merola, Mark Wong, Kim Gennuala, YuShing Ting, Vicki Borges and too many beauty queens to mention.

Chinese lion dancers performed during the ceremony officially naming the theater’s inner lobby as the Dr. Lawrence & Mrs. BoHing Chan Tseu Lobby.

Dr. Tseu was congratulated by John Henry Felix and Leilani Keogh after the program.

Hawaii Chief Justice Ronald Moon, left, and his wife, Stella enjoyed the reception with Danny Kaleikini and Linda Wong.

Dr. Tseu with Tammy Kubo and her husband, newly confirmed state judge Ed Kubo, whose appointment to the bench had been approved by a 24-1 Senate vote earlier that day. Ed said he had no complaints about the length and thoroughness of the approval process, but added it was much easier to enjoy the party now that it was over.

Miss Hawaii Teen USA Julianne Chu got a hug from Eric Chandler.

Johnny Kai, left, talked with Miss Hawaii USA Renee Mokihana Nobriga and Ed Keough.

Dr. Angela Pratt congratulated Dr. Tseu.
