Willie K lived up to his reputation for unpredictability last night as he entertained a sold-out crowd with almost two hours of music in the third “Ke Kani O Ke Kai” summer concert at the Waikiki Aquarium.

He put a fresh spin on one familiar tune by playing “Katchi Katchi Music Makawao” on ukulele instead of guitar, and closed the second half of the show with a Bollywood-style engagement of “Waterfall” that he introduced by saying, “sometimes I get lost in my Punjabi mode.” It was a fascinating musical trip. Honolulu hip-hop heads came together at Tropics Cafe last Saturday to celebrate the homecoming of one of their own, MC Meiso, who is back in town after touring in Asia.

Hosted by KTUH’s DJ Bone, “Hip-Hop at the Trops” is a regular showcase of local rap acts and home to some of the fiercest freestyle battles in town. His “Got Rice? Show” on the University of Hawaii student-run radio station is another bastion for Hawaii hip-hop in a sea of mainland sameness heard on the majority of mainstream commercial radio. Read more

After originally being scheduled to take place at the new Tropics the Warehouse at the Ward Entertainment Complex, last weekend’s “Hip-Hop at the Trops” three-year anniversary party ended up going down at SoHo Mixed Media Bar in Chinatown.

According to promoter DJ Bone, the event was moved after Tropics management decided they weren’t ready to open for business. Luckily, he had a backup plan in the works from about a week before the show was scheduled to take place, so it didn’t take much work on his part to move the party to SoHo.

Headlining act Aceyalone, who closed out the night, ended up back at Tropics Cafe on Sunday for a hana hou performance at the bar. Read more

Following an early evening art show, special guest DJ Ace was joined by local DJs Revise, Rayne and Miko Franconi; Roxy-on-the-MIC served as the night’s hostess.

Congrats to SoHo’s Daniel Gray and his entire staff on their first year in business. Read more
